10-Minute Footwork & Agility Drill
Goal: quick feet, clean cuts, and body control that translate to every position on the field.
What you need
- 4–6 cones (or shoes/water bottles as markers)
- 10–15 yards of space
1) Warm-up shuffle (2 minutes)
- Lateral shuffle 10 yards, touch the ground, shuffle back
- Stay low — hips down, chest up
- 4 reps
2) Cone weave (3 minutes)
- Set 5 cones in a line, 3 yards apart
- Weave through forward, then backpedal through
- Focus: plant the outside foot, don’t round the turn
- 4 reps forward, 4 reps backward
3) Backpedal and break (3 minutes)
- Backpedal 10 yards, then sprint forward at a 45-degree angle
- This simulates a defensive back reading a play
- “Hips low, eyes up, explode on the break”
- 6 reps — 3 breaking left, 3 breaking right
4) Box drill (2 minutes)
- Set 4 cones in a 5-yard square
- Sprint forward → shuffle right → backpedal → shuffle left
- Go clockwise, then counter-clockwise
- 2 reps each direction
Coaching cues
- “Stay low” — tall players lose in change of direction
- “Plant and drive” — don’t drift through turns
- “Quick feet, not fast feet” — control beats speed
Time the box drill with a stopwatch. Track it on the tracker page and measure improvement over weeks.
